Effects of message framing and video remix on health misinformation correction using short video applications

ABSTRACT

Short video applications (SVAs) have become prominent health information sources for adolescents, where they actively seek, share, and learn about health information. These platforms host diverse health information and provide an environment where misinformation is particularly “sticky,” especially around stigmatized issues such as eating disorders (ED), which are highly visible among adolescents. Misconceptions regarding ED, such as framing restrictive eating as lifestyle choices or failing to recognize ED in men, pose significant health risks for a vulnerable age group. Addressing health misinformation in these digital environments is critical, yet communication research has yet to establish effective correction strategies tailored to SVAs. This study examined the efficacy of remix videos that pair corrections with ED misinformation to counter related misconceptions on SVAs. Using a 2 × 2 + 1 experimental design, we tested 294 Chinese adolescents aged 15-17 who viewed either an ED misinformation-only video or remix correction videos that visually combined misinformation with rebuttals using platform remix tools. Remix corrections varied by message framing (fact-based vs. narrative-based) and remix format (sequential “stitch” vs. side-by-side “duet”). We measured cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes. Videos featuring the lived experience of a male patient were particularly effective in improving attitudes and reducing stigma, especially in side-by-side duet formats, which produced downstream effects on adolescents’ willingness to support peers with ED. Results showed that videos as brief as one minute were sufficient to produce measurable correction outcomes, underscoring the potential of platform-specific remix techniques in combating health misinformation within adolescents’ native digital environments.
